Resumo: The article begins by discussing personal and family archives, and the changes in the concept and custody of these documents. The author focuses specially on archives created by politicians, showing how the access to these documents is complicated by the presence of two opposed interests: the individual right to private property and privacy, on one side, and public and academic interest, on the other. A second point refers the documents of personal interest kept in public archives, specially those created by repressive institutions. The access to these documents, which have been often obtained under circumstances that violate human rights, must be assured for the sake of individual rights and academic research without threatening the privacy of the people concerned.

A autora analisa principalmente os arquivos de políticos, aos quais o acesso é complicado devido à presença de dois interesses opostos: o direito individual à propriedade privada e à privacidade, de um lado, e, de outro, os interesses público e acadêmico. Um segundo ponto analisado refere-se aos documentos de interesse pessoal mantidos nos arquivos públicos, principalmente aqueles criados por instituições repressoras. O acesso a esses documentos, obtidos freqüentemente através de circunstâncias que violam os direitos humanos, deve ser assegurado, em nome do exercício dos direitos individuais e do interesse de pesquisa, sem ameaçar a privacidade das pessoas em questão.
