Resumo: This study had for purpose to discuss the relations between the occupation/utilization of the sea and beach and the development of rowing in the 19th century Rio de Janeiro, trying to comprehend those relations since the changes in the social-cultural context of that city. It was possible to conclude that rowing has developed an important cultural practice when sea/beach was progressively related to health and new aesthetic concept of body, influences of Europe in Brazil.

Ao final, foi possível concluir que o remo se desenvolveu no decorrer do século XIX como importante prática cultural quando o mar e as praias foram progressivamente relacionadas à saúde e à nova condição estética de corpo, influências da Europa no Brasil.
