Paper gifts: written culture and sociability in Oliveira Vianna's correspondence

Resumo: The purpose of this article is to discuss the current interpretation which considers Oliveira Vianna as a withdrawn and lonely intellectual, through the analisis of practices and strategies used by him in order to construct his social network. A very specific kind of correspondence in Oliveira Vianna's personal archive was analysed: the letters which were written by people who were thanking the author for books which had been sent to themas gifts. By studying, among all of his correspondents, those which received "paper gifts", we are able to perceive the signs of a friendship practice materialized in epistolary writing.

Para tanto foi analisado, no arquivo pessoal de Oliveira Vianna, um tipo específico de correspondência: aquela escrita por pessoas que agradeciam os livros, de sua autoria, que ele enviava de presente.
