Resumo: The article examines the relations between regionalism and national identity, focusing on the French case during the Third Republic period. The central argument is that there is no basic contradiction between regional discourse and movements, on one hand, and national identity building, on the other. On the contrary, regionalism appears as a necessary complementary dimension of French national identity construction process carried on by different trends and actors in different moments. This is the reason of its longevity and persistence in a highly centralized nation like France.

Editora FGV1995-07-01info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/1994Revista Estudos Históricos; Vol. 8 No. 15 (1995): History and Region; 3-16Revista Estudos Históricos; v. 8 n. 15 (1995): História e Região; 3-162178-14940103-2186reponame:Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro)instname:Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)instacron:FGVporhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/1994/1133Thiesse, Anne-Marieinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2017-06-14T21:04:01Zoai:ojs.periodicos.fgv.br:article/1994Revistahttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rehONGhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/oai||biblioteca.digital@fgv.br||eh@fgv.br2178-14940103-2186opendoar:2024-03-06T13:01:29.976709Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) - Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)true
