From the Trees of Recife (1924) to the Coastal Forest of the Northeast (1937): Ecology, Tropics, and Region in the Work of Gilberto Freyre

Resumo: The aim of this article is to investigate Gilberto Freyre's ecological and environmental discourses in two distinct but interrelated historical moments. In the first moment, this work analyzes newspaper articles published by the “Diário de Pernambuco” in the 1920s, particularly in 1924, when the young Freyre wrote a series of texts in defense of the arborization of Recife. The second moment, in the 1930s, was marked by the publication of "Nordeste" in 1937, in which the author criticized the environmental devastation of the coastal strip, specifically the sugar mill owners. Freyre approached ecological questions within the intellectual and political architecture that characterized his work, intertwined with the defense of the tropics e Iberian traditions.

Del primero se analizan sus artículos periodísticos publicados en el Diário de Pernambuco durante la década del veinte, con énfasis en el año 1924, cuando el joven Freyre escribió una serie de textos en defensa de la arborización de la ciudad de Recife. El segundo momento, en los años treinta, aparece signado por la publicación de Nordeste, libro de 1937 en el cual el autor criticó la devastación ambiental de la zona del monte, con críticas a los propietarios de ingenios azucareros modernos. Freyre abordó las temáticas ecológicas en el marco de la arquitectura intelectual y política que singulariza su obra, permeada por la defensa del trópico e de las tradiciones ibéricas.O objetivo do artigo é investigar os discursos ecológicos e ambientais de Gilberto Freyre em dois momentos históricos distintos, mas relacionados. No primeiro momento, analisa-se os artigos de jornal, publicados no Diário de Pernambuco, na década de 1920, com ênfase no ano de 1924, quando o jovem Freyre escreveu uma série de textos em defesa da arborização do Recife. O segundo momento, nos anos 1930, é marcado pela publicação de Nordeste, livro de 1937, em que o autor criticou a devastação ambiental da Zona da Mata, com críticas ao complexo industrial das usinas.
