‘The Justices of the Peace Are All Thieves’: Public Authorities and the Slave Trade in the Province of Bahia (c.1831 – c.1841)

Resumo: The present article analyzes the involvement of public authorities in the slave trade in the context of the implementation of the 1831 law that prohibited the trade of Africans to Brazil. Judges, prosecutors and other agents not only covered up the traffic but also benefited from their positions to conduct business in the new landing and distribution routes for newly-arrived Africans in the interior of the province of Bahia. These authorities played a key role in the continuity of slave trade.

Jueces, promotores y otros agentes públicos no sólo encubrieron actividades del tráfico como se beneficiaron del puesto para realizar negocios a partir de las nuevas rutas de desembarque y de distribución de africanos recién llegados en el interior de la provincia de Bahia. Esas autoridades tuvieron un papel fundamental para la continuidad de las actividades del tráfico.Este artigo analisa o envolvimento de autoridades públicas no tráfico de escravos no contexto da implementação da lei de 1831 que proibiu o comércio de africanos para o Brasil. Juízes, promotores e outros agentes públicos não só acobertaram atividades do tráfico como se beneficiaram do cargo para realizar negócios a partir das novas rotas de desembarque e de distribuição de africanos recém-chegados no interior da província da Bahia.
