The memory of the pathfinders movement, built up mostly since the last decade of the nineteenth century, through the creation of Instituto Historico e Geografico de Sao Paulo (Historical and Geographical Institute of Sao Paulo), based itself upon the valorization of territorial conquest, creating a heroic image of adventures from Sao Paulo, and omitting the depopulation caused by them. At the beginning of this process, Henrique Bernadelli presents a less triumphal version in his painting 'The pathfinders' (1889), establishing a rich dialogue with art history. The painting incorporates a naturalistic preoccupation while trying to reconstruct the situation of the pathfinder facing nature. It constitutes as well a condemnatory metaphor of the violence practiced against the Indian.
