Resumo: The article presents some reflections on the problem of citizenship, understood as belongingness to a nation, on the basis of two distinct movements that chacarterize the present moment in Europe: in the West, an apparent weakening of ancient national links as a multicultural perspective grows stronger; in the East, the exacerbation of nationalist sentiments, sometimes generating intolerance and violence.
