Resumo: A survey of the life stories of members of the National Academy of Medicine, compared to the French Academy of Medicine, which was its original model, leads to a few considerations. The first point discussed is the function of recruiting and giving social recognition to the elites that this kind of institution can have. The second point refers to the changes that occurred between 1835 and 1989 in the meaning of Medicine, in the organization of its professional practice and in its relations with other fields. Finally, we examine how the importation of medical technologies and models of professional practice has been transferred from Europe to the United States.

O primeiro ponto examinado é a função de recrutamento e consagração social de elites que esse tipo de instituição pode adquirir. O segundo são as mudanças ocorridas no período estudado (1835-1989), que abrangem o significado da medicina, a organização de seu exercício profissional e suas relações com outras esferas.
