Resumo: This article analyses the credit market of the city of Rio de Janeiro between 1650 and 1750. The transformations taking place during the passage from the 17th to the 18th century point to the rise of a new colonial elite which controls the flow of money within this society: the ¿homens de negócio¿ (businessmen/merchants).
