Resumo: This article is intended as a contribution to the debate about the importance of individual actions to historical explanation. It follows the storyline of the life of Benjamin Constant (1837-1891), considered by Brazil's first Republican constitution drafters as the "Founder of the Republic". It presents and discusses the most important moments of his life and examines the connections between his unique trajectory and the development of several historical junctures.
