Outside the big schemes: political-electoral associations of workers in the First Republic, the cases of Pernambuco and Bahia

Resumo: During the First Republic, electoral participation rates were low. However, this did not imply the absence of a dispute for votes. This article seeks to show that organized workers played a fundamental role in structuring electoral competition in urban centers. The analysis of the cases of Pernambuco and Bahia shows that: workers formed the majority of the electorate in the capitals; class associations organized different stages of the voting process; the labor movement created original forms of political participation and representation through collectivized mandates.

Este artículo pretende mostrar que los trabajadores organizados desempeñaronun papel fundamental en la estructuración de la competencia electoral en los centros urbanos. El análisis de los casos de Pernambuco y Bahía muestra que: los trabajadores formaron la mayoría del electorado en las capitales; las asociaciones de clase organizaron diferentes etapas del proceso de votación; el movimientoobrero creó formas originales de participación y representación política a través de mandatos colectivizados.Durante a Primeira República os índices de participação eleitoral eram diminutos, no entanto isso não implicava ausência de disputa por votos. O presente artigo procura evidenciar que os trabalhadores organizados tiveram papel fundamental na estruturação da competição eleitoral em centros urbanos.
