The prison blots: stigma and discrimination on correctional officers

The stigma of living in the prison system blemishes and oppresses the egress personality what could be said about the correctional officers who work at these facilities? Faced with this question, this article aims to verify whether the correctional officers suffer from discrimination because of their work. The methodology applied to this study includes literature review and thirty-four interviews (9 to 14 May 2013; 23 October to 27 November 2015), with correctional who work at prisional institutions of Rio Grande do Sul. Twenty-seven of these interviews took place at Madre Pelletier Women’s Prison, and seven at other prison houses. The analysis of the collected material indicates that the blemish of prison affects not only the imprisioned people, but also its workers, who are also targeted for their contact with the institution.
