The quality of medication management in public hospitals

This article is based on an exploratory study comparing the quality standards described in scientific literature with the actual ones in public hospitals in the city of Natal, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The objective was to determine the level of quality in medication and related items logistics in these institutions. The data was gathered through a collection instrument applied by the researchers. Such instrument contained relevant indicators that allowed the verification the quality of medication and related items management in the selected sectors: administration, purchases, supplies and pharmacy. The results show that many factors contribute directly and indirectly in a decisive manner to the shortage of medication and related items. However, most of them are either unknown or overlooked by hospital managers. The deficiency in medication and related items logistics is typical of the state hospitals under study and the quality of their logistics is far from scientific literature standards.
