Analysis of the environmental management situation in the industries of the state of Rio de Janeiro

This article analyzes how the industries and some of their stakeholders are reacting to environmental issues, through a comprehensive survey of environmental management performed by industries in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It studies those industries¿ current situation as to the environmental issue, including what measures they have already adopted, their plans, their environmental problems, what their stakeholders question, and how those firms have tried to catalyze their actions in the environmental field in order to reach better results. Of the 4,100 questionnaires sent, 337 were returned completely filled out. After this stage, field trips and interviews took place in 23 firms. The results have shown that the industries are adopting several measures in the environmental field, some yielding environmental improvements as well as economic returns (eco-efficiency). There are also several interactions with external stakeholders, such as environmental agencies, banks, insurance companies, non-governmental organizations, and communities. The main obstacles to environmental improvement are the lack of technical information, the cost and financing of environmental actions, and the environmental agency¿s slowness.
