Resumo: This paper describes in general terms how international academic institutions organize themselves for managing the process of protection and economic exploitation of intellectual property rights. It deals with different aspects: the organization of the intellectual property and technology transfer office, the institutional policies that support the activities of the office, the professional profiles, the requirements for building the portfolio of patents and other intangible assets, the use of patents as important source of information for different kinds of projects, the marketing activities, the negotiation and economic exploitation of intellectual property rights, and the distribution of royalties.
