Resumo: This paper analyzes the nature of household expenditures with medical care, especially with health plans — taking in account the appearance of a comprehensive coverage through the Unified Health System (SUS). In other words, based on the expense, budget and savings of the families found on the database of the Household Budget Survey (POF), the paper describes and analyzes the magnitude and the distribution of health expenditures in 1987 and 1996. Particularly, it assesses the health plans, lending special attention to the findings related to the medium and lower income levels.

Em outras palavras, a partir da leitura dos dados da Pesquisa de Orçamento Familiar (POF), onde se identificam as estruturas de gasto, receita e poupança das famílias, avaliamos, de forma descritiva e analítica, a magnitude e a distribuição dos gastos nos anos de 1987 e 1996.
