Resumo: This article has sought to present a few evidences of the impact the economic crisis produced upon the Brazilian people's living conditions. As confirmed by significant information available, the crisis which configured itself in the ear1y '80s has abruptly cut off the recuperation of wages under way since the previous decade, because it brought about the destruction of numerous job opportunities. A greater concentration of personal income, a deterioration of mechanisms for social attention, as well as crises on the social security and housing systems, have been inevitable by-products of falling rates in employment and salaries. The democratic transition started in 1985 has propitiated ample discussion and proposals for reform of social security instruments, with a view at more comprehensive and more efficacious programs. However, in order to face these challenges, some strategies for intervening on mechanisms of social inequalities reproduction are needed.
