Resumo: The Belo Monte hydroelectric plant, the fourth largest in the world in terms of installed capacity and the largest genuinely Brazilian, has a much-troubled history, immersed in hot debates. On the one hand, its defenders, with good arguments, such as the country's growing need for renewable and clean energy, and, on the other, its detractors, also with good arguments, such as the environmental and social costs resulting from the hydroelectric. The purpose of the case study is to lead the student along the tenuous border that divides economic development from its negative impacts on the environment and local communities.
