Social and institutional embeddedness and capabilities: the shoe industry of Nova Serrana

Resumo: | This study investigates the influence of social and institutional embeddedness on the acquisition of business capabilities in the footwear industry, in its relationships with clients, suppliers and sector organizations. Social embeddedness was regarded from the perspective of relational embeddedness and institutional embeddedness, with regard to its sphere influence on the dynamic capabilities of firms and their degree of embeddedness vis-à-vis clients and suppliers. An examination was also carried out into the ties that firms have with other key actors who are non-participants of the sector, and the extent to which they exert an influence on the capabilities and involvement of the firms in the sector organizations. The data collection involved conducting esearch into 78 firms and structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to evaluate the relationships being explored. The results show that the relationships of the firms with the suppliers and their involvement with the organizations are the most important factors in acquiring capabilities. The relationships with the clients and the other actors did not make any significant contribution to the acquisition of capabilities. |

Inmersión social fue considerada en la perspectiva de la inmersión relacional, e inmersión institucional, en el ámbito de su influencia sobre las capacidades de las empresas y sobre el grado de inmersión con clientes y proveedores. Las relaciones de las empresas con otros antores, no participantes del sector, también fueron investigadas como influenciando las capacidades y la participación de las empresas en entidades sectoriales. La recolección de datos incluyó un estudio realizado con 78 empresas, y utilizó el modelado de ecuaciones estructurales para evaluar las relaciones propuestas. Los resultados indican que las relaciones de las empresas con proveedores y la participación en entidades son los elementos que tienen mayor relevancia para la adquisición de capacidades. Las relaciones con clientes y con otros actores no presentaron contribución para la adquisición de capacidades.Este trabalho investiga a influência da imersão social e institucional na aquisição de capacidades de empresas calçadistas em suas relações com clientes, fornecedores e entidades setoriais. Imersão social foi considerada na perspectiva da imersão relacional, e imersão institucional, no âmbito de sua influência sobre as capacidades das firmas e sobre o grau de imersão com clientes e fornecedores. As ligações das firmas com outros atores, não participantes do setor, foram também investigadas como influenciando as capacidades e a participação das firmas em entidades setoriais. A coleta de dados envolveu pesquisa realizada com 78 firmas, e utilizou-se de modelagem de equações estruturais para avaliar as relações propostas. Os resultados indicam que os relacionamentos das firmas com fornecedores e a participação em entidades são os elementos que têm maior relevância para a aquisição de capacidades.
