Management attempts in the field of culture in Pernambuco: the case of cultural producers

Resumo: This article aims to explore the dimensions of management in the action of cultural producers in the field of culture in Pernambuco, Brazil, from the theoretical perspective of Pierre Bourdieu. By means of an exploratory and qualitative approach and using participatory observation, interviews, and hermeneutic analysis as methodological tools, the main results concern: the application of management without considering the particularities of the field of culture in each state; the evidence that management constitutes a resource of power (or capital) in the field of culture; and the unequal distribution of this resource of power considering the habitus of agents – those who have incorporated the new habitus of the field, reflecting changes that the social structure went through, and have greater ease to possess the cultural capital related to management knowledge – and the very arguments that lead some producers to hinder access to this resource of power, seeking to keep their position in the field. We conclude that management may take larger proportions, influencing dynamics, relations, and arguments between agents in a social field, something which reinforces the claims of those who criticize the management industry.

Por meio de uma abordagem exploratória e qualitativa e utilizando observação participante, entrevistas e análise hermenêutica como ferramentas metodológicas, os principais resultados dizem respeito: à aplicação do management sem considerar as particularidades do campo da cultura de cada estado; à evidência de que o management constitui um recurso de poder (ou capital) no campo da cultura; e à distribuição desigual desse recurso de poder considerando o habitus dos agentes – aqueles que incorporaram o novo habitus do campo, que reflete as mudanças pelas quais a estrutura social passou, e têm maior facilidade de deter o capital cultural relativo aos conhecimentos do management – e as próprias disputas que levam alguns produtores a dificultar o acesso a esse recurso de poder, buscando manter sua posição no campo.
