The main purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between school failure, defined here as years of grade repetition, and the selfconcept of 8th grade public school pupils in Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro. Two groups of pupils were used: one with and another without any experience with grade repetition. The 'Tennessee Selfconcept Scale', developed by H. Fitts and translated and abridged by Carona in 1977, was employed in order to verify this possible relationship. This scale has 30 items with 5 alternatives to each question. The greatest score possible is 150 (30x5) and the smallest score is 30 (30xl) denoting, respectively, a self-concept breaking up due to overestimation ar underestimation. The comparison between the means of the groups studied shawed a significant covariance between grade repetition and the selfconcept of the pupils and social class as well. Though the results of this research are nat conclusive, we find it valid for it supplies more information for one of the most serious problems in school in Brazil; i.e. that of grade repetition.
