This paper aims to explore the evolution of the concept of gentrification since the 1960 decade, when this term was used for the first time, until its most recent conception. It is defined as the expulsion of the low-income population from its residence, due to urban intervention processes. Initially characterized as a phenomenon carried out by high and middle class, in its most recent development it has incorporated different features such as economic development, neoliberalism and competition, and the State started to assume a role to promote those changes through the execution of urban policies. This work explores examples of cases that gave birth to this concept in the United States, England and Canada. Some Brazilian cases of gentrification are explored and its features are described in order to differentiate from past examples. Given that the State is the driver behind this process, the paper concludes that the incorporation of housing policies and the social inclusion in the programs that will transform the urban space could minimize the effects of gentrification.
