Práticas de sustentabilidade na cadeia de suprimentos de castanha do Brasil na indústria de alimentos: o caso Wickbold

Resumo: This paper investigates, using the case´s study methodology, the sustainability practices in Brazil nut supply chain in the food sector. Through the Origins Brasil program, the company Wickbold buys about 30% of the total Brazil nuts generated by registered producers, reaching 18% of its total volume purchased from the market, following, in this case, a model with traceability, sustainable and inclusive, with origin in 3 Amazonian territories. The model contributes to the maintenance of 11 protected areas with more than nine hundred people impacted by fair trade relations, including Indigenous and traditional peoples, and it´ssupported by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) Imaflora and Instituto Socioambiental (ISA). The Origins Brasil program employs sustainability-oriented governance criteria in the different links that integrate Amazonian communities into the supply chains of Brazilian industries and presents successful cases of identifying suppliers that respect social and environmental aspects, generating work and income keeping the forest alive. The Brazil nut supply chain still suffers from episodes of forced or child labor in the Amazon region, partly due to the isolation of productive areas from the country's main urban centers. Brazil nut extractivism is an alternative for local development in the Amazon, but there are challenges related to traceability and logistics between producers and buyers that must be transposed to expand the scale of models such as Origens do Brasil. Thus, it is essential to integrate communities with initiatives that connect them with its supply chain connections, invest in technologies and training to comply with quality and sustainability standards to serve end customers.

Por meio do programa Origens Brasil, a empresa Wickbold compra cerca de 30% do total gerado de castanhas do Brasil pelos produtores cadastrados, alcançando 18% de seu volume total adquirido do mercado seguindo, nesse caso, modelo com rastreabilidade, sustentável e inclusivo, com origem em 3 territórios amazônicos. O modelo contribui para manutenção de 11 áreas protegidas com mais de 900 pessoas impactadas nas relações de comércio justo, incluindo povos indígenas e tradicionais, e é apoiado pelas organizações não-governamentais (ONGs) Imaflora e Instituto Socioambiental (ISA). O programa Origens Brasil emprega critérios de governança orientados à sustentabilidade nos diferentes elos que integram comunidades amazônicas a cadeias de suprimentos de indústrias brasileiras e apresenta casos bem-sucedidos de identificação de fornecedores que respeitam aspectos sociais e ambientais, gerando trabalho e renda mantendo a floresta em pé. A cadeia de suprimentos da castanha do Brasil ainda sofre com episódios de trabalho em condição análoga à escravidão, forçado ou infantil na região amazônica em parte pelo isolamento das áreas produtivas dos principais centros urbanos do país. O extrativismo de castanha do Brasil é uma alternativa para o desenvolvimento local na Amazônia, mas há desafios relacionados à rastreabilidade e logística entre produtores e compradores que devem ser transpostos para ampliação da escala de modelos como o do Origens do Brasil. Assim, é essencial tanto integrar as comunidades com iniciativas que as conectam com seus elos de cadeia de suprimentos, quanto investir em tecnologias e capacitações para cumprimento de padrões de description This paper investigates, using the case´s study methodology, the sustainability practices in Brazil nut supply chain in the food sector. Through the Origins Brasil program, the company Wickbold buys about 30% of the total Brazil nuts generated by registered producers, reaching 18% of its total volume purchased from the market, following, in this case, a model with traceability, sustainable and inclusive, with origin in 3 Amazonian territories. The model contributes to the maintenance of 11 protected areas with more than nine hundred people impacted by fair trade relations, including Indigenous and traditional peoples, and it´ssupported by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) Imaflora and Instituto Socioambiental (ISA). The Origins Brasil program employs sustainability-oriented governance criteria in the different links that integrate Amazonian communities into the supply chains of Brazilian industries and presents successful cases of identifying suppliers that respect social and environmental aspects, generating work and income keeping the forest alive. The Brazil nut supply chain still suffers from episodes of forced or child labor in the Amazon region, partly due to the isolation of productive areas from the country's main urban centers. Brazil nut extractivism is an alternative for local development in the Amazon, but there are challenges related to traceability and logistics between producers and buyers that must be transposed to expand the scale of models such as Origens do Brasil. Thus, it is essential to integrate communities with initiatives that connect them with its supply chain connections, invest in technologies and training to comply with quality and sustainability standards to serve end customers.
