THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SCENARIOS METHODOLOGY FOR FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS DURING TIMES OF CRISIS

Resumo: Recently, the need to apply strategic planning methodologies in business has risen, since corporations are part of a globalized world in which technological change and economic dynamism are evolving at a faster pace. Thus, firms must perform not only efficiently but also effectively in adapting to changes as they occur in the political, economic, technological, legal and environmental dimensions. This dictates the need for new strategic organizational positioning. The potential usefulness of the scenarios methodology was investigated for a sample of financial institutions with assets in the Brazilian market, based on management reports and in accordance with strategic dimensions needed to cope with crises. Therefore, we propose a new methodology for the qualitative analysis of official management reports, which indicates a perception of scenario building within organizations. The results suggest a positive relationship between the quality of the process of generating scenarios and the financial results of the banking institution. Key-words: Scenarios. Crisis. Na atualidade, faz-se cada vez mais necessária a aplicação de metodologias de planejamento estratégico nas empresas, considerando que estão inseridas em um mundo globalizado, onde as mudanças tecnológicas e o dinamismo da economia estão em ritmos mais acelerados. Assim, exige-se das empresas um desempenho cada vez mais não apenas eficiente, mas também eficaz quanto à adaptação às mudanças, pois estas têm ocorrido nas dimensões política, econômica, tecnológica, legal, ambiental e outras, exigindo novos posicionamentos estratégicos das organizações. A utilidade potencial da metodologia de cenários foi investigada para uma amostra de instituições financeiras com ações no mercado brasileiro, com base na análise de relatórios oficiais, segundo dimensões estratégicas relevantes para enfrentar momentos de crise. Neste sentido, propomos uma nova metodologia para a análise qualitativa dos relatórios de administração que nos indica uma percepção da construção de cenários dentro da instituição. O estudo tem como marco o ano de 2008, que apresentou um dos piores cenários econômicos desde a grande depressão em 1929. Os resultados encontrados sugerem uma relação positiva entre a qualidade do processo de geração de cenários e o resultado financeiro da instituição.
