The measure of Closeness Centrality and its relations whit the urban form

This study verifies if the statistical distributive pattern of the measure of Closeness Centrality can describe aspects such as compaction/fragmentation of the form of the city and irregularity of the urban network. 29 Brazilian cities of similar size were selected with morphological patterns of road and conformation of the urban area quite distinct. The urban systems were described by their road center lines represented by means of graphs, in order to analyze the correlations between the measure and the urban aspects described. It was observed that the distributive pattern of the measure is strongly influenced by the compactness of the urban form and directly related to the greater or lesser presence of urban voids. It also presented relations with the irregularity of the urban network, understood as the hierarchical level of the road layout in connective terms. More compact and more irregular cities (as networks) have better general overall indices with the measure. The results achieved so far suggest demonstrating that the use of descriptors of the aggregate behavior of the measure of Closeness Centrality can be a good indicator of more global characteristics of the urban morphological structure.
