The use of medicinal plants in Primary Health Care in Mossoró/RN: contribution to prescribers

Resumo: The study aimed to investigate the use of medicinal plants by users at Primary Health Care in Mossoró, RN, Brazil. It was performed a survey by interview using a semi-structured questionnaire applying to 100 participants, 84% of them reported to use of medicinal plants, mainly for digestive, respiratory, mental, and behavioral disorders. 54 plant species were cited, the most frequent were Plectranthus barbatus, Peumus boldus, Mentha spp., Lippia alba, Melissa officinalis, Cymbopogon citratus, Matricaria chamomilla, and Plectranthus amboinicus. The specie with the highest value of use was Cymbopogon citratus and mental and behavioral disorders the category of greatest consensus among informants. The most used plant part was the leaf while the main preparation form was the tea. Most of the medicinal species reported are described in official compendia, such as Phytotherapeutic Formulary and Phytotherapeutic Memento of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia. Knowledge about validated medicinal plants is useful to the prescribing professionals to guide the rational and correct use of these plants, mainly because are used as home remedies.

Foi feito um levantamento através de entrevistas com questionário semiestruturado a 100 participantes, dos quais 84% afirmaram utilizar plantas medicinais, principalmente para afecções do sistema digestivo, respiratório e para transtornos mentais e comportamentais. Foram mencionadas 54 espécies vegetais, destacando-se boldo (Plectranthus barbatus e Peumus boldus), hortelã (Mentha spp.), erva cidreira (Lippia alba e Melissa officinalis), capim santo (Cymbopogon citratus), camomila (Matricaria chamomilla) e malvarisco (Plectranthus amboinicus). A espécie com maior valor de uso foi Cymbopogon citratus e transtornos mentais e comportamentais a categoria de maior consenso entre os informantes.  A parte da planta mais utilizada foi a folha, e a principal forma de uso, o chá. A maioria das espécies medicinais relatadas estão descritas em compêndios oficiais, como o Formulário de Fitoterápicos e Memento Fitoterápico da Farmacopeia Brasileira.
