Resumo: The study aimed to carry out a survey on the use of medicinal plants by medical clinic users of the Special Health Service of Araraquara (SESA), of the Faculty of Public Health of the University of São Paulo (FSP/USP), Brazil. The information was obtained through interviews with 63 patients of the medical clinic of the SESA. The results show that of the total respondents, 60% were women, the most aged between 60-69 years. 70% of respondents use and/or have used medicinal plants, the most cited being lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.). 50.33% seek information on the use of medicinal plants with the family. 82% reported not inform to doctor about the use of medicinal plants, before or during treatment. Respondents reported unaware of the risks of the concomitant use of these products with synthetic drugs. Therefore, the promotion of the educational activities and establishment of Phytovigilance protocols in health services is extremely important, minimizing risks of health to patients, resulting from the concomitant use of medicinal plants, herbal medicine and synthetic plants.
