Species grown in the medicinal plant garden of UNIPAR campus 2 with anti-inflammatory action against joint diseases: review

Resumo: | Inflammatory diseases are treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, which have numerous side effects that can restrict their use and duration. Therefore, in order to improve the health of patients suffering from inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (AR) and osteoarthritis (OA) the present work aimed to carry out a survey in the available scientific literature of the main medicinal species with anti-inflammatory action against joint diseases, cultivated in the Medicinal Garden of Campus 2 of UNIPAR – Universidade Paranaense/Umuarama. Among the 92 species used as anti-inflammatory, only 6 were selected: Zingiber officinale, Curcuma longa, Baccharis trimera, Solidago chilenses, Cordia verbenacea, and Echinodorus grandiflorus. Studies have shown that the aforementioned medicinal plants have effects on attenuating the symptoms and pathogenesis of patients who have RA and OA, whose bioactive compounds present were effective in reducing inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, COX, pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. With this, it is concluded that the use of medicinal plants with anti-inflammatory potential, alone or in combination with certain conventional antiarthritic drugs, can be an alternative or auxiliary therapy for the treatment of AR and OA, acting in the interruption and relief of pain, preventing damage to joints and organs. |

Diante disso, com o intuito de melhorar a saúde dos pacientes que sofrem de distúrbios inflamatórios como a artrite reumatoide (AR) e a osteoartrite (OA), o presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar um levantamento na literatura científica disponível, das principais espécies medicinais com ação anti-inflamatória contra doenças articulares, cultivadas no Horto Medicinal do Campus 2 da UNIPAR – Universidade Paranaense/Umuarama. Dentre as 92 espécies do Horto, empregadas como anti-inflamatória, 6 foram selecionadas: Zingiber officinale, Curcuma longa, Baccharis trimera, Solidago chilenses, Cordia verbenacea, e Echinodorus grandiflorus. Os estudos demonstraram que as plantas medicinais supracitadas possuem efeitos na atenuação dos sintomas e patogênese de pacientes que possuem AR e OA, cujo compostos bioativos presentes, mostraram-se eficazes na redução de mediadores inflamatórios como prostaglandinas, COX, citocinas pró-inflamatórias e quimiocinas.
