Resumo: Maytenus ilicifolia (Celastraceae) is a plant popularly known as "espinheira-santa". The species is native to the southeastern region of Brazil, better adapted to hot climates and is used in folk medicine in the treatment stomach diseases. Phytotherapy is expanding in Brazil and worldwide, and due to this growing search and disorderly extraction of medicinal plants, many sell similar species as if they were original, compromising the real effectiveness of the products used. The anatomical comparison has proven to be useful in the differentiation of species. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the authenticity of "espinheira-santa" commercialized in São Mateus-ES herb markets, through the characterization of leaf anatomical comparison of samples of M. ilicifolia in situ and commercialized. The results obtained show that the leaf anatomical structures of M. ilicifolia in situ, compared with the samples of the Natural House and the Municipal Market differ in terms of the arrangement of the vascular bundles in the central rib, in terms of petiol shape and presence or absence of isolated fiber groups in the cortex. Finally, it can be observed that the material marketed in the herb market, possibly does not agree with the species M. ilicifolia.

Centro de Inovação em Biodiversidade e Saúde - Farmanguinhos/Fiocruz2021-06-30info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdftext/htmltext/xmltext/htmlhttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/96610.32712/2446-4775.2021.966Revista Fitos; Vol. 15 No. 2 (2021); 144-152Revista Fitos; Vol. 15 Núm. 2 (2021); 144-152Revista Fitos; v. 15 n. 2 (2021); 144-1522446-47751808-9569reponame:Revista Fitosinstname:Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ)instacron:FIOCRUZporhttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/966/789https://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/966/790https://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/966/847https://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/966/854Copyright (c) 2019 Revista Fitoshttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessRibeiro, Fabiane FonsecaZottele, LiviaRibeiro, Izabela FerreiraOliveira, Natane Sartor deReis, Thassyane RiosAoyama, Elisa MitsukoMenezes, Luis Fernando Tavares de2021-07-01T20:46:52Zoai:ojs.revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br:article/966Revistahttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/PUBhttp://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/oairevistafitos@far.fiocruz.br || eugenio.telles@far.fiocruz.br2446-47752446-4775opendoar:2021-07-01T20:46:52Revista Fitos - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ)false
