Resumo: Annually, the leishmaniasis, an infectious parasitic chronic disease, affects millions of people around the world. Nevertheless, it is one of the most neglected diseases, yet. There is a constant effort to be successful to discover new molecules that may lead to less toxic drugs and more effective diagnostic methods, new vaccines and strives. In Brazil, the leishmaniasis affects predominantly North and Northeast regions, but epidemiological data presented here, show an increase in its incidence and prevalence in Rio de Janeiro city. With the aim to build the support the research in finding new treatments for leishmaniasis, surveys were made of the publications, national and international patents, and the number of Brazilian researchers inserted in this search.

Mesmo assim, é uma das doenças mais negligenciadas. A comunidade científica constantemente se esforça para alcançar êxito na descoberta de novas moléculas que possam originar medicamentos menos tóxicos e mais eficazes, novos métodos para diagnóstico, e novas vacinas. No Brasil, a doença atinge, predominantemente, as regiões Norte e Nordeste, mas dados epidemiológicos aqui apresentados, mostram o crescimento da incidência e da prevalência da leishmaniose no município do Rio de Janeiro.
