Resumo: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the use of Brazilian medicinal plants in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus, a disease that affects approximately 5 million people worldwide. The study was conducted using data obtained from the databases PubMed, ISI Web of Science and Science Direct, as well as, specialized Brazilian botanical literature. It was observed that treatment with medicinal plants have been intensifying and were verified a total of 10 species distributed in 9 botanical families which can be considered effective in the treatment of lupus reducing the symptoms caused by this disease. Considering that in Brazil the majority of the population do not have to medicines, and these have a high cost and several adverse effects, the results achieved so far with plants and their metabolites constitute a stimulus for research of new herbal medicines in therapy of lupus.

Centro de Inovação em Biodiversidade e Saúde - Farmanguinhos/Fiocruz2012-09-30info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdftext/htmlhttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/15310.32712/2446-4775.2012.153Revista Fitos; Vol. 7 No. 03 (2012); 198-206Revista Fitos; Vol. 7 Núm. 03 (2012); 198-206Revista Fitos; v. 7 n. 03 (2012); 198-2062446-47751808-9569reponame:Revista Fitosinstname:Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ)instacron:FIOCRUZporhttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/153/151https://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/153/1155Copyright (c) 2012 Revista Fitos Eletrônicainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessChaves, Douglas S.
