Resumo: This study was based on scientific literature in the area of medicinal plants. The preliminary review was made on the characterization botany, ethnobotany, ecology, chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and nutritional value of two species of the genus Bauhinia, Bauhinia forficata Link and Bauhinia variegata L. used as hypoglycemic agents. The main data has been compiled to highlight the potential of these species as raw material for the pharmaceutical industry.
