Resumo: Search for substances with photoprotectant properties can contribute to reduce the harmful effects inflicted onto skin by solar radiation, the most prominent of which is skin cancer. Thus, in the present work photoprotectant activity of propolis extracts and also of the extract in association with the synthetic sunscreen 2-ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate was evaluated. Additionally, initial studies on photodegradation of the extracts after exposure to visible and monochromatic UVB radiation were undertaken. Microwave extraction was accomplished, using ethanol as solvent. Fluid and dry extracts were obtained. Sun protection factor (SPF) was determined in vitro for the extracts at 3, 10 and 40 % (w/v). Results show that dry extracts presented higher SPF values than fluid extracts, and the association of the extracts to the sunscreen 2-ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate led to increased SPF values, which suggests a synergistic effect. Photodegradation studies indicated that visible radiation did not result in alteration of SPF values. On the other hand, incidence of monochromatic UV  radiation promoted a hypochromic effect, with a decrease of two units in SPF values. These results demonstrate that propolis extracts present a potential effect as a skin photoprotectant against solar radiation.

Centro de Inovação em Biodiversidade e Saúde - Farmanguinhos/Fiocruz2010-09-01info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdftext/htmlhttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/12010.32712/2446-4775.2010.120Revista Fitos; Vol. 5 No. 03 (2010); 73-84Revista Fitos; Vol. 5 Núm. 03 (2010); 73-84Revista Fitos; v. 5 n. 03 (2010); 73-842446-47751808-9569reponame:Revista Fitosinstname:Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ)instacron:FIOCRUZporhttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/120/119https://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/120/1198Copyright (c) 2010 Revista Fitos Eletrônicainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessRamos, M.
