Antidiabetic properties of medicinal plants of the genus Bauhinia: integrative review

Resumo: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous group of metabolic disorders that result in hyperglycemia due to defects in insulin action and/or secretion, and it is possible to find in the literature several plants with reports of antidiabetic activity, including those of the Bauhinia genus. Thus, the purpose of this article is to approach through the literature the antidiabetic properties of medicinal plants of the Bauhinia genus, which are popularly known as pata-de-vaca, unha-de-vaca, unha de boi or bauínia. Thus, a bibliographic survey was carried out in the LILACS and PubMed/MEDLINE databases, which covered national and international publications, from 2000 to 2021, totaling 20 articles. It was evidenced through the articles that the Bauhinia genus would be an adjunct to the treatment of Diabetes mellitus, presenting antidiabetic properties, and that its use helps in the control of the pathology and damage prevention. However, even though it is a plant widely used by the population, it has not yet been regulated by the National Agency of Sanitary Vigilance of Brazil and has no therapeutic indication, as more studies are still needed to prove its safety and efficacy, especially in humans.

Assim, o objetivo desse artigo foi abordar através da literatura as propriedades antidiabéticas das plantas medicinais do gênero Bauhinia, que são popularmente conhecidas como pata-de-vaca, unha-de-vaca, unha de boi ou bauínia. Dessa forma, foi realizado um levantamento bibliográfico nas bases de dados LILACS e PubMed/MEDLINE, que abrangeram publicações nacionais e internacionais, de 2000 a 2021, totalizando 20 artigos. Evidenciou-se através dos artigos que o gênero Bauhinia  seria coadjuvante à terapêutica do Diabetes mellitus, apresentando propriedades antidiabéticas, e que sua utilização auxilia no controle da patologia e prevenção de danos.
