Pesticide use and sustainable rural development in western Paraná: alternatives, perspectives and challenges

Sustainable Rural Development - DRS is a topic widely discussed today, notably in the western region of Paraná, considering that it is an essentially agricultural region with large land properties. One of the great paradoxes in this matter is the indiscriminate use of pesticides in agricultural production in view of the risks, investments and expectations placed by producers, without forgetting the quality of the food produced. Given this dichotomy, the present study seeks to report through the bibliographic review on the use of pesticides in production systems, the DRS and organic production and agroecology as alternatives to this system and still analyze some challenges and perspectives for the transition in the West of Paraná. The methodology consists of bibliographical and documentary research, in order to verify the current situation of agricultural production, which measures can help in the transition and the difficulties faced. With the research, we found worrying rates of the amount of pesticides used in Western Paraná and, more worrying, the finding that these substances are in the food produced. On the other hand, organic and agroecological production, originating mainly from family farming, appears as a possible solution, but with countless challenges to face.
