The Rondon Commission and the representation of the Paresi identity: a dialogue by means of photographs

Resumo: This article discusses the role of photography in constructing identity in the Paresi indigenous society. By analyzing the discourse of a historical period which is considered ideal by Indians (the Rondon Commission), this study contrasts the official view and the Paresi discourse as regards the theme. Rondon’s memoirs are used to introduce the group’s current issues. Photography is an important support to the history of different groups; among the Paresi, photography plays a role in connecting history and memory by constructing the basis to disseminate knowledge not only among the Paresi society but also to members of other indigenous and non-indigenous societies.

Através do discurso sobre um período histórico considerado ideal pelos indígenas – a Comissão Rondon – a pesquisa contrapõe a visão oficial do projeto ao discurso Paresí sobre o tema. A memória sobre Rondon é usada para apresentar as questões atuais do grupo. A fotografia constitui um importante suporte à história de diferentes grupos.
