Health research in three major newspapers of Pará: a study about health news published over 130 years

This article presents an exploratory study about the coverage of scientific issues related to health in three major daily newspapers in a Brazilian state called Pará: A Província do Pará (1876-2002), Folha do Norte (1896-1974) and O Liberal (1946-2006). We developed a quantitative and longitudinal study, selecting articles about science that were published in the January and July issues every 10 years for 130 years. We identified 168 texts with these characteristics and we have used  content analysis of the texts, and also we analysed frames. The coverage of health research emphasized the diseases, differently from the World Health Organization broader view of health. The newspapers highlighted the benefits of science to society and gave little space to uncertainties and controversies. There were good contextualisation of facts, presentation of scientific background and explanations of technical terms. Foreign researches were recurrent and scientists were the main sources and voices, emphasizing the legitimacy given to these actors.
