Occurrence of Cyanobacteria in Mundaú Reservoir, in Pernambuco State During January 2010 to November 2011

Resumo: The cyanobacteria are prokaryotes, resembling bacteria, and carry out photosynthesis to produce oxygen as plant cells. The blooms of these organisms can cause problems in public water supply sources, because some species can produce cyanotoxins. The aim of this study was to verify the occurrence and densities of cyanobacteria in reservoir Mundaú-PE, from January 2010 to November 2011. This reservoir is part of the river basin Mundaú and is located in the municipality of Garanhuns - PE. Were analyzed 23 samples of water from of this reservoir at LACEN-PE. Of these, 21 (91.3%) had densities above the maximum recommended by specific legislation. During this period there were intense cyanobacterial blooms in the months of April, May and from August to December. Since these last months are inserted in the dry season in this region, when there were high densities of certain species. Among the species the most important were Microcystis panniformis, Microcystis protocystis, Raphidiopsis curvata, Raphidiopsis mediterranea, Geitlerinema amphibium, Synechocystis aquatilis and Coelomoron Tropicale. We conclude, therefore, that these cyanobacterial blooms, potentially producing cyanotoxins is a public health problem, because the reservoir Mundaú supplies the city of Garanhuns and other cities.

As florações desses organismos podem causar problemas em mananciais de abastecimento público, pois algumas espécies podem produzir cianotoxinas. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a ocorrência e as densidades de cianobactérias no reservatório de Mundaú-PE, no período de janeiro de 2010 a novembro de 2011. Esse reservatório faz parte da bacia hidrográfica do rio Mundaú e está localizado no município de Garanhuns – PE. Foram analisadas 23 amostras de água desse reservatório no LACEN-PE. Dessas, 21 (91,3%) apresentaram densidade acima do limite máximo preconizado pela legislação específica. Durante esse período ocorreram intensas florações de cianobactérias nos meses de abril, maio e entre agosto e dezembro. Estes últimos meses estão inseridos no período de estiagem dessa região, quando ocorreram elevadas densidades de determinadas espécies. Dentre as espécies destacaram-se Microcystis panniformis, Microcystis protocystis, Raphidiopsis curvata, Raphidiopsis mediterranea, Geitlerinema amphibium, Synechocystis aquatilis e Coelomoron tropicale.
