Resumo: Objective: To survey clinica[ and epidemiological aspects of breast cancer in women surgically treated at the Gynecology and Mastology Service of HEAA. Method: We perform the revision of data from 236 patients submitted to surgical intervention at HEAA between 1998 and 2000. The clinica[ and epidemiological descriptive aspects analized were: prognostic factors as age, size of tumor, histologic grade, clinica[ stage, and immunohistochemical data. Except for immunohistochemical data, a correlation was made between the descriptive aspects and axilar involvement. These findings were compareci withdata available in the literature. Results:The median age of the surgically treated patients was fif ty -five years;  the  youngest  being 28 year  old and the oldest 89. The prevalence of breast cancer was 25 for the 40 to 49 year-old patient population and  23,7% for 50 - 59 year-old age group. Tumor si ze was smaller than 2cm (T1) in 19,1% and 2 to 5cm (T2) in 46% of the patients. Clinica[ staging (CS) showed the foll owing distribution: CS O 3%, CS 115,7%, CS 11 53%, CS 111 24,2% and CS IV 4,2%. Histo logic grade li corresponded to 82,9% of the analized specimens . The most frequent surgical treatments  were quadrant ect omy with axilar  lymph nades  ressection in  14% and radical mastectomy  in  72,5% of cases. With regard to lymph nodes invol vement, 50,5% of the case were negative and involvement of 1 to 3 lymph nades in 20,6% women treated by surgery . The immunohistoc hemical  profiles  were:  receptors  for  estrogen in 52,8%; receptors for progesteron e in 46,5%; Ki67 in 89,7%; P53 in 48,2%; HER2neu in 22,4%. Conclusion :  Women who were sur gically treated in  the Unit  of Mastology  of  HEAA frequently  showed advanced clinical staging. This fact suggests that screening of breasts needs to be implemented at large as an efficient measure for early prevention of breast cancer development.
