Resumo: The study presented here aims to contribute to the discussion about the knowledge that underlies the work of professionals who work in the management of environmental patrimony in the industry. It can be said that environmental problems are consequences of the specific way of life of industrialized societies and the conception of the world that sustain them. The discussion about the management of the environmental patrimony will provoke the analysis of the model of society in which we live and the discussion about the guiding knowledge for the management of this patrimony in the environmental sphere. The research methodology adopted is qualitative in nature. Twenty-six professionals working in environmental management programs of six industries, certified by ISO 14001, in Joinville-SC, participated in the study. The results of the study point to a set of knowledge that requires the apprehension of reality in an interdisciplinary way, resulting from non-linear, non-deterministic processes, demanded by the need for a sustainable world.

Se puede decir que los problemas ambientales son consecuencia del modo de vida especí­fico de las sociedades industrializadas y de la concepción del mundo que las sustentan. La discusión sobre la gestión del patrimonio ambiental suscitará el análisis del modelo de sociedad en que vivimos y la discusión sobre los conocimientos orientadores para la gestión de ese patrimonio en la esfera ambiental. La metodologí­a de investigación adoptada es de naturaleza cualitativa. Participaron de la investigación 26 profesionales que actúan en programas de gestión ambiental de seis industrias, certificadas por la ISO 14001, en Joinville-SC. Los resultados del estudio apuntan un conjunto de conocimientos que requieren la aprehensión de la realidad de forma interdisciplinaria, derivados de procesos no lineales, no deterministas, demandados por la necesidad de un mundo sostenible.    O estudo aqui apresentado tem como objetivo contribuir com a discussão sobre os conhecimentos que fundamentam o trabalho de profissionais que atuam em gestão do patrimônio ambiental na indústria.  Pode-se dizer que os problemas ambientais são consequências do modo de vida especí­fico das sociedades industrializadas e da concepção de mundo que as sustentam. A discussão sobre a gestão do patrimônio ambiental suscitará a análise do modelo de sociedade em que vivemos e a discussão sobre os conhecimentos norteadores para a gestão desse patrimônio na esfera ambiental. A metodologia de pesquisa adotada é de natureza qualitativa. Participaram da pesquisa 26 profissionais que atuam em programas de gestão ambiental de seis indústrias, certificadas pela ISO 14001, em Joinville-SC.
