Resumo: Introduction: Adopting a child is more than a choice, it is a decision, to completely take on a child from another story and give him a place of child, offering redemption of the opportunity to live in a family with physical and emotional support. definitive form and with all the bonds proper to the affiliation, with rights and duties. Objective: Considering the importance of a conscious decision and the need for reflections on this issue, the objective of this research was to analyze the motivations that led the applicants to the adoption act, as well as the profile of the desired children to be adopted children. Methodology: A cross-sectional qualitative and quantitative study was conducted based on data recorded in psychosocial processes of the Childhood and Youth Court of a Forum in the state of Minas Gerais. For the composition of the sample, 41 processes were read and 7 were excluded because they do not have the complete data required by the research script, resulting in n = 34. Considerations: In the results found, it was found that most applicants to adopt are married, and the law does not restrict the right to adopt to single, divorced and widowed. The age of most applicants is 31 to 40 years old, with most men having completed high school and women having higher education with various professions. Regarding the motivations that lead these people to want to adopt, most are due to infertility, a result that goes against what is evidenced in the specialized literature, in which the factor of infertility prevails and subsequently altruistic issues. Already the profile of the child desired by future adoptive parents, it was found that a large majority declare their preferences, causing this to promote the main obstacle in the adoption process, because studies indicate that most children waiting in institutions, to be adopted , do not have the desired profile. It can be concluded from this research that the adopters of children have a strong desire to be parents, due to the motivation of not being able to have biological children accompanied by a wanting to help someone and that the consulted works provide a support in the understanding that, in families well-oriented, adoptive parenting can be equated with blood parenting because of the strong affective bonds built.
