Resumo: This article addresses the impact of cancer on the elderly, aiming to understand the challenges faced during the illness process. Using a qualitative narrative review of the literature, it explores the experiences and concerns of older people in the oncological context. The results reveal that the psychosocial impact of the diagnosis involves fear, anxiety and stress, contributing to issues such as depression and isolation. Ethical dilemmas in communication and the stigma associated with cancer influence the perception of the elderly. Family support, coping strategies, balance between pain and quality of life, spirituality and religion are crucial in this process. These are essential aspects for successful aging, promoting well-being, positive adaptation and thus contributing to an improved quality of life.

Utilizando uma revisão bibliográfica narrativa de natureza qualitativa, explora-se as experiências e preocupações dos idosos no contexto oncológico. Os resultados revelam que o impacto psicossocial do diagnóstico envolve medo, ansiedade e estresse, contribuindo para problemas como depressão e isolamento. Dilemas éticos na comunicação e o estigma associado ao câncer influenciam a percepção do idoso e o suporte familiar, estratégias de enfrentamento, equilíbrio entre dor e qualidade de vida, espiritualidade e religião são cruciais durante esse processo.
