Resumo: Palliative care can provide an opportunity to transform matters related to death, making it much more humanized. Such care is not intended to interfere in the time that the passage may occur and is based on support for the family in the process of mourning. Consistently seeking to offer relief and reduction of suffering for the patient, both emotional and physical, improving the quality of life and creating the possibility of support until the last days of their life. The purpose of this study was to identify and recognize what palliative care is and to indicate which support can lead the patient to have dignity before dying, reporting the importance of the nursing area to the patient and their family in these last moments of life. This paper was based on a bibliographical review conceptual carried out through health-related databases such as BIREME, PUBMED, SCIELO, BVS, and also monographs, thesis, and books. The publications years chosen were from 2007 to 2017. According to those studies, it was observed that palliative care needs a greater attention, as they stand out as primordial, and may even provide better comfort to the patient and their family. Several care professionals will be involved in the process of caring for the terminally ill patient, among them stands out the nurse, who is present all the time offering dignity in the last moments of life, providing comfort and adequate support. This professional has all the capacity to draw up an individualized plan of care for patients in the terminal phase, aiming to comfort the patient and their family or caregiver, since they try at all times to create bonds and show respect, making the passage more lenient. The nurse must deal with naturally with the illness, taking care of the patient with all their technical and scientific knowledge, seeking to demonstrate empathy and compassion, in solidarity to the family and patient.
