Resumo: Introduction: Suicide is an act in which the individual acts voluntarily in order to end his own life. Suicidal behavior is classified into three categories: Ideation, Attempt, and Consummate. Research indicates that one of the stages of life with the highest incidence of suicide is adolescence. Many young people have difficulty expressing their feelings and, in the face of the characteristic problems of the period, may develop suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Such behaviors require observation and precaution, especially from the family that plays a key role in this context. Objective: This paper aims to identify, through a bibliographic research, the risk factors that serve as stimuli for a possible suicide attempt, especially in adolescence, as well as pointing subsidies for prevention of this phenomenon. Methodology: The literature review included articles and scientific papers available in the databases of the CAPES Periodic Portal, Scientific Library Online (Scielo), Google Scholar and Lilacs, published from 2010 to 2019. Considerations: Among the many causalities involving suicidal acts, there are social, environmental, genetic, biological and cultural factors. Thus, it is not possible for just one aspect to explain the cause that leads a person to commit suicide. A problematic family context is a major risk factor for suicide, as it can cause feelings of helplessness in the situation in which the young person finds himself. The path between ideation, threats, attempts and the consolidation of the suicidal act provides an ideal time frame for the prevention of suicide. This period allows the family to intervene at the moment of crisis, using listening and a space in which they can understand these adolescents and help them cope with this situation. The psychologist in these cases offers necessary care, guides and forwards to the mental health network. It is essential that family and health professionals be aware of the signs young people present when they are about to commit suicide, as their identification helps to reduce the suicide rate. However, prevention does not happen quickly and easily, requiring the involvement of all people who are part of the youth's life, with an intervention based mainly on the physical, psychological, social and cultural aspects. Thus, the importance of the elaboration of intervention and awareness strategies is emphasized in order to prepare health professionals to act in the prevention of suicide.
