Etilismo. Lesão Bucal. Pescadores. Exposição Solar. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of potentially malignant oral lesions in fishermen and associated factors. 65 fishermen of both sexes, over 18 years of age, participated in the study. The volunteers were evaluated in 2022, clinically in conventional chairs, with a good source of lighting, with the aid of wooden spatulas, gauze to remove the anatomical structures and then answered a sociodemographic and health questionnaire. After this stage, they participated in educational lectures on oral cancer, covering definition, development, etiological factors, preventive aspects of the disease, and the importance of periodic visits to the dentist. A prevalence of 18.5% of oral lesions was observed, with the majority located on the lips (57.2%) and mouth (35.7%). The prevalence of oral lesions among fishermen who routinely use medication was 28.0% and among those who do not use it, the prevalence was 12.5%. Among fishermen with cases of cancer in the family, the prevalence of oral lesions was 26.7%, while among the others, it was 11.4%. Traumatic injuries accounted for 12.3%. There was no significant association between the oral lesions investigated and the study variables, however, the prevalence of lesions in smokers was (30.0%), for the use of alcohol (18.9%) and the use of illicit drugs (33.3%). Although no significant association was found between the presence of oral lesions and the variables studied, the study highlights the importance of early diagnosis of lip changes in fishermen due to their exposure to the sun, which puts them at risk for the development of potentially serious lesions malignant.
