RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é fazer um breve exame do destino errante de John Milton, poeta inglês do século XVII, na poesia de Machado de Assis. A presença/ausência miltoniana será analisada pelo viés da “destinerrance”, um termo cunhado pelo filósofo Jacques Derrida, que con-funde destino, herança e errância. Isto é, a constituição da poesia machadiana está (in)certamente ligada, não tão somente a William Shakespeare – o bardo de Stratford-upon-Avon --, mas também a outro amigo inglês do bruxo do Cosme Velho: John Milton. ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to briefly survey the errant destiny of John Milton, a 17th-century English poet, in the poems of Machado de Assis. This presence/absence of Milton will be analysed through a new pathway of influence – Destinerrance – that is, a word coined by the philosopher Jacques Derrida. In other words, the oeuvre of Machado de Assis is linked, not only to Shakespeare – the English Bard --, but also to another English friend of the “Bruxo do Cosme Velho”: John Milton.
