Introdução: Trabalhos científicos têm evidenciado a necessidade de atenção especial aos idosos forçando os países a promoverem ações que garantam o bem-estar da população idosa. Segundo dados obtidos pelos IBGE, a partir de 1960, a população brasileira desde de 60 anos de idade, cresceu de 9,8% em 2005, para 14,3% em 2015, tornando a reflexão sobre o tema envelhecimento populacional de salutar importância. No Brasil, apesar de a Constituição Federal de 1988 garantir direitos dos idosos, somente no ano de 1994 foi instituída a primeira Política Nacional voltada a este público. Outrossim, as políticas públicas voltadas à terceira idade têm de se tornar pauta obrigatória na discussão, para que o Estado brasileiro consiga suportar e atender a todos os idosos no futuro. Objetivos: Promover reflexão sobre as políticas públicas criadas e sua insuficiência frente ao aumento populacional da terceira idade. Realizar breve análise histórica e tecer considerações sobre as políticas públicas em prol dos idosos. Metodologia: O método utilizado foi o bibliográfico. Conclusão: O trabalho evidencia que, para a concretização de um Estado de pleno bem-estar social, os entes públicos (União, Estados, DF e Municípios) deverão viabilizar debates com a sociedade civil com a pauta de intensa ampliação das políticas públicas para idosos pois, somente assim, o Estado brasileiro poderá construir positivamente a realidade social, suportando o crescimento populacional desta faixa etária nos próximos anos. Palavras-chave: População Idosa. Envelhecimento. ASTRACT  Introduction: Scientific work has highlighted the need for special attention to the elderly, forcing countries to promote actions that guarantee the well-being of the elderly population. According to data obtained by the IBGE, as of 1960, the Brazilian population from 60 years of age grew from 9.8% in 2005, to 14.3% in 2015, making the reflection on the theme population aging salutary importance. In Brazil, although the Federal Constitution of 1988 guaranteed the rights of the elderly, it was only in 1994 that the first National Policy aimed at this public was instituted. In addition, public policies aimed at the elderly must become a mandatory agenda in the discussion so that the Brazilian State can support and care for all the elderly in the future. Objectives: To promote reflection on the public policies created and their insufficiency in face of the increase in the population of the elderly. Carry out brief historical analysis and make considerations about public policies for the elderly. Methodology: The bibliographic method was used. Conclusion: The work shows that for the realization of a state of full social welfare, public entities (Union, States, DF and Municipalities) should enable discussions with civil society with the agenda of intense expansion of public policies for the elderly, because only then can the Brazilian State positively build social reality, supporting the population growth of this age group in the coming years. Keywords: Aging Population.
