This article discusses and tries to understand the religious representations that were attached to Agostinho José Pereira, a black freed, known in 1846 as the Divine Master, who was the leader of a subversive “sect”. Accused, among other things, schismatic and iconoclastic, it is of our interest to plot a narrative that explains how the Divine Master dialoged and confronted the representations built on him, but also for him, stereotyping him, but that did not become a mere monologue, because since as the Divine Master fought with them, he dialoged with them. Assuming that the devotion of Agostinhos’ followers puts us in touch with a series of clashes and discussions that took place in the nineteenth century between the various models of religiosity that circulated in the Empire. Key-words: power relations, boundary devotion, amphibious religiosity. |
