With the main objective of establishing some connections between nation's and region's concepts, The article aims to analyze the historical period before the proclamation of Republic in Brazil, after which, and as a consequence of it, the monarchic regime was definitely eroded in this country. It is not only important but crucial as well to search for the remarkable aspects of diverse changes in national life at that time: slavery was abolished, free work arose, monarchy lived its final years, and the first and difficult ones of the new Republican system entered national scenario. New and old representations through new and old discourses — some of them quite clear, some others containing evasions and uncertainties — started to arise referred to a promising present and to a past to be exorcized. Some of those presented the design of what were conceived as national and what were defended as regional. Key words: Regionalization; Ideological discourse; National and regional; Hegemony; Empire and Republic; Northeast and Southeast. |
